The Institute of Traditional and Alternate Medicine (ITAM) of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) on Monday, February 17, 2025 signed a five-year renewable Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ghana Association of Medical Herbalists (GAMH). This is an initiative aimed at establishing a framework for cooperation to promote the development, research, education and integration of Traditional and Complementary Alternative Medicine (TCAM) into Ghana’s healthcare system.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Lydia Aziato, speaking at the signing ceremony said the MoU seeks to develop and deliver accredited certificate, diploma and postgraduate programmes in TCAM and herbal medicine practices. She further intimated that the agreement will foster collaborations on research projects, focusing on the efficacy, safety and standardization of herbal medicines and natural products, among others.
The President of GAMH, Dr. (MH) Sandra Ashong, who signed the MoU on behalf of the Association related that the collaboration with UHAS offers them the perfect opportunity to champion herbal medicine and its integration into Ghana’s healthcare system. The parties to the agreement generally expect the collaboration to set the stage for joint advocacy for the recognition and integration of TCAM practices into Ghana’s primary healthcare system as well as encourage collaboration in clinical training and internship placements for students of herbal medicine. Accordingly, the parties will collaborate on capacity building and education, research and development, advocacy and public education, clinical practice and service delivery.
