Ghana and India collaborate for Traditional Medicine Development

The Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine (ITAM) of the University of Health and Allied Sciences signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on July 2, 2025 with the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) – under India’s Ministry of AYUSH. 

 

The MoU was signed at the Flagstaff House during the official visit of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to Ghana and it forms part of a package of four MoUs signed between India and Ghana to strengthen cooperation in culture, health, standards and diplomacy.

 

The ITRA-ITAM MoU was signed by the Indian Minister of AYUSH and the Ghanaian Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh in the presence of H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This agreement aims to advance Ayurveda education, research, clinical training and institutional capacity building in Ghana and beyond.

 

This milestone agreement was expertly facilitated by The Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Mr. Manish Gupta and Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to underscore the growing diplomatic and scientific cooperation between the two nations.

 

After signing of the MoU, a state dinner was hosted in honor of the Indian Prime Minister and his delegation. Also present were the Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Professor Lydia Aziato and the Director of ITAM, Professor Kwame Banga. 

 

The University of Health and Allied Sciences wishes to acknowledge and appreciate the Founding Director of ITAM, Professor Marcel Bayor and the former Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Mr.  C. Sugandh Rajaram who both initiated the MOU process in 2021 and laid the foundation for its success.

 

The MoU will support the establishment of herbal product laboratories, introduce the launch of certification programmes and the expansion of traditional medicine training which will solidify ITAM’s role as a regional hub for integrative medicine. The MoU will also serve as a gateway to a new era of collaboration and shared knowledge between India and Ghana Traditional Medicine.
