The Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine has demonstrated strong capacity in attracting competitive grants and implementing impactful research projects that align with national health priorities and global development goals. These projects support ITAM’s core mandate of evidence-based validation, product development, capacity building, and integration of Traditional, Complementary, and Alternative Medicine into mainstream healthcare.

 

1. PHYMEPALU Project (ECOWAS)

Title: Clinical Validation of Antimalarial Herbal Products in West Africa
Description: This ECOWAS-funded regional initiative focuses on the scientific evaluation of herbal formulations traditionally used to treat malaria. ITAM’s role includes pharmacological, toxicological and clinical validation.
Partners: ECOWAS, Regional Research Institutions
Outcomes: Establishment of a regional database of validated antimalarial herbs; harmonisation of quality standards.

 

2. Seeding Labs – Instrumental Access Programme

Title: Enhancing Laboratory Infrastructure for Herbal Product Research
Description: Through this in-kind grant, ITAM received high-value laboratory equipment to strengthen its NatPro Lab and research training capacity.
Outcomes: Increased ability to perform product analysis, toxicological testing, and training of students and industry professionals.
